This project was an exploration of a new suburban residential typology. Rather than create a block that occupies a site uniformly, we concentrated the program along one edge of the property to maximize both the inside space and the yard area of this relatively narrow lot. The main bar was set against the north side with a second story master suite spanning over an outdoor living room below, leaving a relatively large yard space. The front gate can be opened up along the entire width of the yard to increase the usable play space from the sidewalk to the outdoor living room. The entry is set within the bar to create a vestibule. Strategically placed skylights serve to brighten otherwise dark corners of the house. The first floor is an open plan with kitchen and dining room set apart from the living room by casework and two steps downward. Upstairs the hall-cum-piano nobile, is a generous space that serves as the family office. The childrenís bedrooms share a bath centered between their play/sleep area. A rubberized floor was installed to allow for extreme indoor sports including a climbing wall. A successful climb leads to a private loft over the bath.
